A strong local economy
- Ensuring fiscal responsibility
- Providing a good business environment
- Making smart investments to attract and retain a skilled workforce
- Employing innovative strategies to recruit new business, industry, and jobs
Janet recognizes that the economy will be a significant challenge over the next couple of years. However, she doesn’t believe that Wichita should retract, retreat, and think small during this time. Certainly, City government must be fiscally responsible and keep control of the bottom line, and Janet is committed to doing this the same way she does in her personal life. But in addition to careful management of the budget, Janet believes that now is the time to plan for our community’s future so we will be prepared when the economy begins to rebuild.
We must also make smart, focused investments that will expand the local economy. Such investment will grow and develop the workforce, which will attract and retain business/industry. Both will help Wichita maintain its tax base.
And we must ensure a good business environment in Wichita, making it easier to do business in and with the City. This will help business/industry grow and create new good-paying jobs, which will bring in new tax dollars.
Thriving neighborhoods
- Improving access to City services
- Replacing crumbling infrastructure and addressing street flooding issues
- Addressing blight in older neighborhoods
- Listening to concerns about new development in newer neighborhoods
- Improving neighborhood safety through enhanced community policing
Janet understands that Wichita is only as healthy as its neighborhoods, and District 6 has many. It’s home to some of the oldest neighborhoods in the City, as well as several where new homes are still being built. Janet understands that this creates a variety of needs and concerns. Her availability and commitment to work full time as a City Council member will mean she has time to address the many issues of all District 6 neighborhoods.
Janet is committed to ensuring that neighborhoods and their residents have easy access to City services and open communication with her as a Council member. She understands the need to address crumbling infrastructure, flooding issues, and blight in the older neighborhoods, as well as pay attention to the issues associated with new commercial development near the newer neighborhoods. Janet is dedicated to improving neighborhood safety through enhanced community policing, adding a police bureau, and community partnerships such as Weed and Seed.
Vibrant quality of life
- Providing unique parks and recreational opportunities
- Creating a lively urban core
- Offering a variety of arts and cultural experiences
Janet understands that communities with a vibrant quality of life do better economically than those that don’t. She knows that to attract and retain a highly qualified workforce – one that will keep our largest and highest paying companies in Wichita and draw new high-tech enterprises – we must provide the quality of life these employees and their families demand.
This means having unique parks and recreational opportunities, a lively urban core, and a variety of arts and cultural experiences. Without them, we stand to lose our best and brightest young professionals to other cities.
